Jay travelled from Cape Town to Kenya with us during our first year of GreatGuides. He is currently working on the inner workings of GreatGuides.Org and helping publishers produce new media!
![]() | Along the 2010 GreatGuides.Org Southern and East Africa trip, I was eaten by mosquitoes, filmed in some of the windiest conditions possible, slept in a tent for months, worked under trees, and endured two young children who treated me like a climbing frame. I also ventured off on my own for a while across wild country, navigating mighty lakes and hitching rough roads through Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, the Congo, Uganda, and the further reaches of Kenya. My trip brought me on every form of transport on the road or otherwise, from bicycle taxis and tuktuks, to huge trucks, trains and ferries made (and one sunk!) during WWI. The moments of horseback riding in the Congo, drinking fresh goat blood in Maasai country, snorkeling for fish in lake Malawi, and tracking monkeys in Ugandan jungle I will never forget. Africa is beyond special! |

My favorite work along the road was working with the children at H.E.L.P. Malawi, a school-based NGO located outside of the Mvuu Camp. I lead a workshop to help four children write, direct, and narrate their own stories about how the NGO helps their community.
I love using my skills as an Anthropologist with the methods of filmmaking to create media for activist causes and public awareness. Other previous work has included the themes of HIV/AIDS issues, Womens and Hazara Rights in Afghanistan, and Malnutrition in Rwanda.
