RACHEL BRAY : Learning from Children
meet Rachel Bray
Rachel worked closely with Dilip Subba in Kathmandu, Nepal
Many years of research and practical work with young people have enabled me to see the world from different angles.
I love using the tools of Anthropology: observation, art, conversation and journaling to record children's lives.
I studied Anthropology in Durham, England. My PhD was conducted in Kathmandu conducting research among street children, seeking to understand the patterns of their lives. I later worked on child labour issues in the carpet industry in Nepal, and cross border human-trafficking across borders in south-east Asia. | |
Research led Rachel to work with Children in the Himalayas |
| In mid 2010 I published a book "Growing Up in the New South Africa" that was the product of five years research, in collaboration with two post-graduate students and Prof Jeremy Seekings. We conducted ethnography in three neighbouring Cape Town suburbs: Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Fish Hoek. Historically these have been areas designated for 'black, coloured and white' people, respectively. Our qualitative research was analysed in the wider context of research in South Africa. It was the first major ethnography of childhood in post-apartheid South Africa. | |
Rachel worked for 5 years among youth in Masiphumelele,CapeTown |
My work is now varied. I consult to organizations, from grassroots community organisations trying to conduct research, to corporates wanting to understand generational gaps in their company. I also conduct research, particularly about how youth cope in difficult circumstances, often with children infected or affected by AIDS.
Whether walking, painting, swimming or cooking on a fire, I find being outdoors in the company of friends old and new immensely rejuvenating. I am excited about what I will learn on the journey of life, including that seen through the eyes of my daughters.
