ROOTS MUSIC
I met Maurice when he was teaching at a Waldorf school near Cape Town. We went along to the school’s ‘spring wiggle’. Under the trees more than 70 people had gathered, many with instruments, and Maurice was leading the improvisation. It was brilliant, largely because Maurice could pick up any style, using any instrument to hand, and jam away, which helped a lot when the eager performers were terrible.Later I discovered that Maurice held regular improvisation sessions at his house. The standard here was fantastic, with some of Cape Town ‘who’s who’ of music arriving to jam with Maurice.
Not only is Maurice a great musician, he is deeply knowledgeable about the mathematics of music, the relationships of different musical styles, how instruments work and how they are made. Enjoy his music, and the way he shares his understanding of the roots of different musical styles.
