They have integrated environmental education and life-skills into sports and training programmes to create nature-based livelihoods for the unemployed and spread the ethic of conservation.

Two hours east of Cape Town, on Walker Bay, the Grootbos Foundation is making a significant contribution to biodiversity and job creation in the region. Established in 2005 at the Grootbos Nature Reserve, the Foundation runs four projects that create nature-based livelihoods and promote conservation.

The Future Trees Project is a forest restoration project to rehabilitate the ancient milkwood forest at Grootbos, damaged by an intense fire in 2006.The Foundation is a Section 21, not for profit, company funded by eco tourism, sponsors, and donations.

The Grootbos Foundation also raise funds through the sale of indigenous plants and landscaping services by the Green Futures Project, the sale of organic vegetables and free-range animal products by the Growing the Futures Project, and the sponsorship of trees for the Future Trees Project. These methods of raising funds help make projects more self sufficient, but are not enough to fund all of their work. Many guests staying at the Grootbos Nature Reserve, companies, and individuals have decided to sponsor aspects of our projects, and this has contributed to the great success of the Foundation.

Our videos will show you more about each project and how you or your organization can contribute to the environmental and social development work of the Grootbos Foundation.
